The Surroundings
Birdseye is a small community located 70 miles south of Salt Lake City. The area was first settled in 1885 and was originally called Summit Basin. In 1897 the name was changed to Clinton. In the nearby area is a marble quarry. It came into operation in the 1880's and operated until the 1940's.
The marble from the quarry is rich in algal ball structures, or elongated, oval shapes in the stone commonly called "birdseyes." Marble from the quarry was used in the Utah State Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, and other state and federal buildings. The town of Clinton eventually had its name changed to Birdseye in honor of the quarry.
